About The Artist

Originally studying traditional realist painting, York soon evolved a semi - abstract style that she found deeply expressive. Dramatizing chosen elements in her subjects and employing bold color strategies evokes a dynamic sense of presence in her canvas. Mainly using acrylic as a chosen medium, York found it to be the most flexible. "My Father, Nicholas, was a painter. I would sit for hours as a child and watch him create these vast seascapes from his mind to the canvas. I knew then that I would become an artist. It's something deep inside you, like the desire for shelter or food. You can put it off for a while, but eventually you have to submit to it."

I work to create the emotive quality of the moment - capturing the depth of a shadow or brilliance of the sunlight. I have rearranged color concepts of light and shadow while Juxtaposing bold intense colors to develop feeling in the painting. I paint the places I have been while capturing the emotive nuance of the day. I have always encompassed a passion for life, color, laughter and the understanding that I am lucky and grateful to enjoy these gifts. This is what I hope people see in my art.
